Scandal

How appropriate that today marks the 50th anniversary since Jack Profumo (of the Profumo affair fame) resigned as minister for war.

The episode enthralled a nation as it got to see the establishment as it was then in all its naked glory. Supposedly it officially marked the end of deferential reverence and the beginning of the 60s’ as we came to know them, but I think the reverence died with 1 million British soldiers and civilians in 2 World Wars.

How fitting though, that this anniversary should be marked by yet more political scandal involving Lords and Ladies (sorry wrong use of L word, meant lobbyists) in yet another Cash for Questions saga and the rumour circulating that another affair is about to break putting Edwina Curry and John Major into the pale. It shows that those at the top of any pile will always think they can get away with anything.

Although as Mandy Rice-Davies said at the trial (kind of anyway) “they would, wouldn’t they”.

Happy anniversary to you all.
